Trek of Upper Mustang Trek is gateway to the mysterious, hidden and old buddhist kingdom of the world. Upper Mustang’s mountain region is boarder to Tibet and posses distinct Tibetan feel in both the culture and people. Isolated kingdom of Mustang is also called Lo and has been isolated from the world for decades.Upper Mustang is located in the northwester Nepal, stretches along the Kali Gandaki River and considered hidden buddhist kingdom of Nepal. Journey to Upper Mustang will create an experience like going back to a time as it is untouched my modernisation.
The region can be reached on foot, by bus or by plane (to Jomsom). The area of Mustang is divided into Upper Mustang and Lower Mustang. The Upper Mustang area is largely populated by people of the Manangi ethnic group and extends to the ancient capital of Lo Manthang. The low-lying Mustang area extends into the valley along the Kali Gandaki River.
Mustang was the last district in Nepal to have its own king until its dissolution in 2008. The people living in Mustang call themselves Lobas. The houses and temples in this region are built of stone and often of sun-baked adobe. The city walls and the four-storey palace of Lo Manthang offer beautiful architecture.
The Upper Mustang area is one of the special areas that require a special permit applied for through a registered trekking agency and issued by the Immigration Office
